What is liposuction and what happens during the procedure? Dr Ash Dutta, cosmetic surgeon at Aesthetic Beauty Centre, explains.
With minimal pain and discomfort and ever reducing recovery periods, more people than ever are requesting liposuction treatments – both surgical and non-surgical. It is therefore worth examining what goes on during liposuction, also known as body contouring or fat removal.
A range of liposuction treatments are available
It is important to stress that there is arrange of liposuction treatments available – not every clinic will offer a choice to patients, but at Aesthetic Beauty Centre we are able to offer a choice from:
The approach involved with all of these obviously varies, but this blog will attempt to give an overview of what you can expect. For more information about the specific procedures, you can click on any of the links above.
Non-surgical body contouring
If you opt for a non-surgical approach to fat removal and body contouring, then options include:
This is aimed at reducing cellulite and involves a near-painless injection in the affected area(s). It is normally completed within 20 minutes. You might need to avoid rigorous exercise for a few days, but there is no significant downtime.
Aqualyx is a targeted fat-dissolving injection that targets specific problem areas. It can be used on all areas of the body. It requires between three and five treatments at three-week intervals, and again there is no major downtime. You can find out more here in our FAQs.
Surgical body contouring and fat removal
A range of popular surgical approaches are also available, and this includes:
BodyTite is very effective in reducing the dimpled appearance of cellulite. If you’re looking for a quick and effective way to lose unwanted fat, then BodyTite offers a safe solution with effective results. It uses Radio Frequency Assisted Liposuction: it is simple to perform and virtually painless.
This is a laser-assisted liposculpture, using fine fibre-optic cables to destroy fat cells and subsequently remove them with liposuction. Advantages of liposculpture include much less swelling and bruising and reduced recovery times.
Laser lipolysis is suited to treating small areas of the face, neck, thighs, knees, calfs and areas of loose skin, including cellulite.
Liposculpture is aimed at people who are close to their ideal weight but who have stubborn fatty deposits in localised areas of their bodies.
It is performed under local anaesthetic and involves a thin, hollow instrument (typically 3-5mm in diameter) called a cannula, inserted through a small incision placed in an inconspicuous location near the area to be treated. Unwanted fat deposits are removed through the cannula using a vacuum, with micro-cannulas (typically 2-4mm in diameter) used to provide more precise sculpting. This method of fat removal is surprisingly easy and permanent. It usually causes minimal bleeding, swelling and bruising. Approximately 2-3 hours are required to perform the procedure. Patients are encouraged to remain active immediately following the procedure.
Vaser Liposuction is a hi-tech procedure that is one of our most popular services. You can read about it more detail here, but in brief, it is an advanced body contouring technique for unwanted fat removal which offers a safe alternative to traditional liposuction.
It combines ultrasonic waves with liposuction technology where ultrasonic waves precisely breaks up and liquefies/emulsifies targeted fat without disrupting connective tissue, nerves or blood vessels, leaving minimal bruising and a reduced recovery time.
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is an effective way of removing excess abdominal fat and skin, resulting in a flatter tummy and slimmer waistline.
The treatment works by making incisions, allowing the removal of surplus skin and fat deposits in the abdominal lower waist. The abdominal muscles are pulled tightly and held together with permanent sutures. You can read more about it here.
SmartLipo, a procedure to remove excess fat deposits, also known as Laser Lipolysis. The SmartLipo laser causes the membrane of fatty tissue cells to break, transforming them into an emulsion which is removed by liposuction. SmartLipo is classed as a minimally invasive procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia, with the patient conscious at all times.
